When love comes in the darkest moment

Donika (26) from Vitia and Andi (28) from Istog have just experienced the greatest joy of their lives – the birth of their first daughter. But just two years ago, they were two strangers. She was going through the hardest days of her life. He was living his quiet routine, not knowing that someone was waiting for him.

Meet Donika and Andi

Donika, 26 years old from Vitia, is an architect by profession. She knows exactly what she wants from life and isn’t afraid to ask for it – but during that period, with her mother sick, she wasn’t able to do so. Love was the last thing on her mind.

Andi, 28 years old from Istog, works in IT. Calm, reserved, successful in his work – but aware that he wanted something more: a stable family. One of those who don’t rush, but when they decide, they decide forever.

When life stops for a moment

October 2023 was not an ordinary month for Donika. Her mother had just suffered a stroke and the days passed between the hospital, tears, and waiting. Donika, a young architect who had just started her career at a studio in Pristina, suddenly found herself in a world where plans for tomorrow no longer made sense.

“I couldn’t sleep at night. I sat next to my mother and thought only about the worst things,” she recalls.

It was her close friend who one evening, trying to distract her, said: “Open this app. Talk to someone. Don’t stay alone with your thoughts.” Donika had no desire for love in those moments. But she opened dua.com, more as an escape from reality than as a search.

A profile that stood out from the others

Andi, on the other hand, had a completely different life. He worked as an IT engineer at a company in Pristina, lived alone in a small apartment in Fushë Kosovë, and spent his free time between coding and long walks. He was an introvert, content with himself, but aware that something was missing.

When Donika started browsing profiles, most looked the same – photos without context, empty descriptions. But Andi’s profile was different. He had written about his work, the books he read, about the fact that he loved quiet more than parties. “He seemed like someone who knew who he was,” says Donika. “And that made me curious.”

The dinner in Ferizaj that lasted until midnight

After a few days of chatting on the app, they decided to meet. They chose Ferizaj – a midpoint, so both would travel equally. Andi arrived 15 minutes early and ordered a coffee he never drank. Donika walked in with a tired smile and eyes that showed sleepless nights.

“I didn’t talk much at first,” Andi admits. “But she talked about her mother, about work, about architecture. And I just listened. I didn’t want to talk about myself – I wanted to get to know her.”

The dinner that was supposed to last an hour lasted until midnight. When they parted, Donika knew she wanted to see him again.

Hundreds of kilometers every weekend

The following months were not easy. Andi lived in Fushë Kosovë, Donika in Viti – close enough to know they exist, far enough to feel the absence every day. They only met on Saturdays.

During the week, late-night phone calls became a ritual – not always about important things, but precisely those small conversations made them realize they wanted to wake up every morning next to each other. “Distance taught us to talk,” says Andi. “When you can’t be physically present, you learn to listen better.”

For Donika, Andi became more than a partner – he became the calm she was missing. “At a time when everything was chaos, he was the only constant,” she says.

From “yes” to “yes” — within one year

In February 2024, only 4 months after they had met, Andi asked Donika if she wanted to get engaged. It was a simple evening, without grand ceremonies – just the two of them, a ring, and a question they both knew the answer to.

In April they started living together. In October they got married. And in February 2025, they became parents for the first time.

“People tell us ‘too fast,'” says Donika. “But when you know, you know. There’s no need to wait to convince others.”

What would they tell others?

Today, Donika and Andi don’t hide how they met. On the contrary, they tell it with pride. “Some are surprised, some are skeptical,” says Donika. “But we are here. With a child. With a home. With love. What other proof is needed?”

For those who still hesitate, Donika has a message: “Don’t wait for the perfect moment. I found love in the darkest moment of my life. Just have the courage to open up.”
